How to measure blood pressure correctly at home: instructions and common mistakes

How to measure blood pressure correctly at home: instructions and common mistakes

How to properly measure blood pressure at home: validated upper-arm device, suitable cuff, rest period, and typical measurement errors explained in an easy-to-understand manner.

5 min.

✨ Key Information at a Glance

• Use a validated upper arm monitor with a fitting cuff.

• Sit quietly for five minutes before measuring; your back and arm should be supported, and your feet should be flat on the floor.

• Measure twice with a short interval in between and record the values along with the date and time.

• Individual values are snapshots. Repeatedly elevated average values require medical assessment.

Why measuring blood pressure at home is important

Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day. A standardised measurement at home can help to obtain a realistic picture over several days. This article explains the procedure and does not replace a personal diagnosis or treatment.

The correct device and cuff

Use a validated device. For most adults, an upper arm device is the more reliable choice. The cuff must match the size of the upper arm and be placed on bare skin, approximately two to three centimetres above the crook of the elbow.

Before the measurement

Avoid physical exertion, nicotine, and stimulating drinks immediately beforehand. Sit quietly for about five minutes. Lean your back against the chair, place both feet flat on the floor, and rest your arm in a relaxed position on a surface so that the cuff is approximately at heart level. Do not speak or move during the measurement.

Step-by-step

  1. Apply the appropriate cuff correctly.

  2. Start the measurement in a state of rest and remain still.

  3. Wait briefly and repeat the measurement.

  4. Note down both values, the pulse rate, as well as the date and time; the average can be helpful for an overview.

If you are taking blood pressure medication, coordinate the appropriate time for measurement with the medical practice [Ordination] and do not alter your intake independently.

Typical measurement errors

Common errors include a cuff that is too small, measuring over clothing, lack of a resting phase, a hanging arm, talking during the measurement, or evaluating only a single reading. Even a high-quality device does not replace correct posture and repetition.

How long should you measure for?

When blood pressure values are being classified for the first time or a treatment is being monitored, a log with morning and evening measurements over several days can be useful. Discuss the scope and duration with your General Practitioner [Hausärztin or Hausarzt]. A home measurement value from approximately 135/85 mmHg can – depending on the medical context – be conspicuous; threshold values do not constitute an automatic diagnosis.

What you can bring to your appointment

Bring your measurement log and, if possible, the device or the exact device model. This allows the measurement method to be verified together and further investigation to be planned appropriately.

Medical notice

This article is for general information purposes only. In the event of severe or new symptoms, do not wait for a routine check-up. In case of chest pain, shortness of breath, paralysis, or speech disorders, call 144 in Austria.

⚠️ When should I consult a General Practitioner?

You should have a medical evaluation for repeatedly elevated average values over several days, significantly contradictory measurements, or symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Paralysis or speech disorders are an emergency: 144. Individual measured values do not constitute a diagnosis.
