The Thyroid - An Important Player in Your Body

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck area and plays a crucial role in your body. It produces hormones that regulate metabolism, body temperature, cell growth and the cardiovascular system. When the thyroid does not function properly, it can cause various health problems.

Thyroid Diseases - What You Should Know

There are several types of thyroid disorders, including:

  1. Hypothyroidism: This occurs when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones, which can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and sensitivity to cold.

  2. Hyperthyroidism: This is an overproduction of thyroid hormones, which can lead to symptoms such as heart palpitations, insomnia, and weight loss.

  3. Thyroid nodules: These are often benign, but in rare cases can be malignant. Examining thyroid nodules is important for detecting cancer early.

Thyroid ultrasound POCUS - what is it?

Thyroid ultrasound, also known as POCUS (point-of-care ultrasound), is a non-invasive diagnostic technique to create detailed images of the thyroid. This allows your doctor to accurately assess the size, shape, and structure of the thyroid. This examination is safe, painless and does not involve any radiation exposure.

Why Thyroid Ultrasound POCUS?

  • Early detection: Thyroid ultrasound scan allows us to detect problems at an early stage, allowing for timely treatment.

  • Evaluating symptoms: If you have symptoms such as a lump in your throat, difficulty swallowing, or swelling, this exam can help identify the cause.

  • Monitoring: If you already have thyroid nodules or have been treated in the past, thyroid ultrasound is used for regular monitoring.

How is the examination performed?

During the examination, you will lie relaxed on an examination table. A special gel is applied to your neck to guide the sound waves. A handheld device called a transducer is moved across your neck and sends sound waves into your body. The reflected sound waves are recorded to create detailed images of your thyroid.

After the examination:

Your doctor will review the ultrasound images and discuss the results with you. If irregularities are found, further testing or treatment may be recommended.
